- The Eruption
- Santorini Name
The position of the island is between 2 huge plates, when
these 2 plates moved that we have earthquakes and eruptions.
The eruption of 1625 B.C. caused the island to remain
uninhabited for 300 years and the destruction of the
Minoan Civilization.
The history say that 200 meter high tidal wave (tsunami)
from the volcano of Santorini reached the coast of Crete
and cose many disasters. Many earthquakes followed, which
caused the 3000 feet crater to collapse inwards and break
the central and western parts of the island in 5 different
pieces allowing water to fill in and create the present day
the Caldera. Approximately 83 sq. kilometers of land
disappeared.
Historicals believe that Santorini is connected with the myth of
Lost Atlantis, then what a better place for accommodation in Oia,
